Chisinau Municipality has joined the UN initiative for Disaster Risk Reduction: “Improving the urban resilience 2030”

Chisinau City Hall has joined the UN initiative for Disaster Risk Reduction: Improving the urban resilience 2030. In order to reduce the negative impact of natural, technogenic or social disasters, Chisinau is the first city in the Republic of Moldova to participate in the global risk assessment and management project.

The official signing ceremony and the UN-led accession certificate was held online, on December 11th, 2020, with the participation of Ion Ceban, General Mayor of Chisinau, Simon Springett, United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Moldova and Octavian Bivol, the Chief Regional Office for Europe, UNDRR.

Ion Ceban, General Mayor reaffirmed the commitments made by the municipality to continue efforts to improve urban resilience, as follows:

  • Improving the physical infrastructure in different areas: transport, energy, health care, water and sewerage;
  • Increasing the resilience through prioritizing of the investments and infrastructure modernization;
  • Assessing and identifying present and future risks which will lead to a better urban development, capable of coping with the climate changes;
  • Improving of the dialog and cooperation between the Local and Central Public Authorities, as well as, with the citizens and civil society.

Moreover, Chisinau City Hall is part of the project "Making Cities Resilient 2030", implemented by the United Nations Office (UNDRR), which is a first step toward developing a long-term resilience strategy.

The "Making Cities Resilient 2030" UNDRR campaign, aims ten objectives needed to improve city resilience, such as: Strengthening financial capacity for resilience, building institutional capacity for enhancing resilience, increasing infrastructure resilience, or ensuring effective response in the event of disasters.
