Exhibition and round table with the generic „Medical Rebirth in Bessarabia: Toma Ciorba and the evolution of the Medical System at the crossroads of the XIX-XX” centuries

Chisinau City Hall informs that on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at 14:00, the exhibition will be inaugurated and the round table with the generic „Medical Revival in Bessarabia: Toma Ciorba and the evolution of the Medical System at the crossroads of the XIX-XX” centuries, dedicated to the remarkable activity of the Bessarabian physician Toma Ciorba. The event will take place in the Panoramic Hall of the History Museum of the City of Chisinau - Water Tower.

Organizers: Museum of History of the City of Chisinau, under the aegis of the General Directorate for Culture and Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the Clinical Hospital for Infectious Diseases „Toma Ciorba” and the National Agency of Archives.

TOMA CIORBA (1864-1936) was an illustrious humanist doctor from Bessarabia, born in Chisinau. Graduate of the faculty of medicine of the University „Saint Vladimir” of Kiev. In 1893 he started working as a medical-sanitary in Chisinau. He was the initiator of the construction and project of the Hospital for infectious diseases, inaugurated in 1896, which he led for more than 30 years.

It was the first specialized medical institution in Bessarabia. Toma Ciorba was running the hospital and also worked as an ordonator, bacteriologist, and curator of young medical workers. He was the pioneer in the implementation of the antiviral vaccine, the domestic product, the mandatory anti-variolic vaccination of the population, the use of serotherapy in the treatment of diphtheria patients.

As a tribute, the Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases „Toma Ciorba” bears his name, and next to it is installed a commemorative plaque.

On the subject „Medical Revival in Bessarabia: Toma Ciorba and the evolution of the Medical System at the crossroads of the XIX-XX” centuries, within the round table with communications will participate: Sergiu VASILITA, Romania, director IMSP SCBI „Toma Ciorba”; Tiberiu HOLBAN, doctor habilitat in medical sciences, university professor; Gheorghe PIECINTA, doctor habilitat in medical sciences, lecturer; Valetina POTING-RASCOV, infectious doctor, doctor, assistant professor; Victor PANTEA, doctor habilitat in medical sciences, lecturer; Aurelia FELEA, doctor in history; head of the Scientific Activities Department National Agency of Archives.

Within the exhibition will be presented documents, photos and other vestiges relevant to the remarkable work of the doctor Toma Ciorba, as well as the work of the Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases of the same name.
